CLIMATE - Data and maps update
Scope
The ESPON 2013 applied research project ESPON CLIMATE developed evidence to understand how and to which degree climate change will impact the competitiveness and cohesion of European regions and Europe as a whole. The project developed a new comprehensive vulnerability assessment methodology based on an IPCC conceptual framework and applied it to all regions across Europe. The methodology and data was updated in 2014. Following requests from stakeholders and interested member states the ESPON EGTC has commissioned a new update concerning methodology, datasets and maps.
Main Objective
The main objective of this service is to update data and indicators related to climate change exposure of Europe’s regions, to climate change sensitivity and aggregated potential impact of climate change on Europe’s regions and to adaptive capacity and vulnerability of European regions to climate change. In addition, the updated data and resulting maps will be analysed against the current policies and interpreted to provide key observations tailormade for policymakers. This update intends to maintain traceability with the original “ESPON CLIMATE” project while at the same time aligning it as far as possible with other key European initiatives and resources, crucial in the framework of the new European Adaptation Strategy, such as JRC PESETA IV report, the Risk Data Hub of the Disaster Risk Management Knowledge Centre (DRMKC), Climate Adapt Portal and its European Climate Data Explorer or the Climate Data Store from the Copernicus Climate Change Service.
Main outcomes envisaged
The main outcomes of the service should be:
- Updated CLIMATE datasets integrated into the ESPON 2020 Database Portal;
- Updated CLIMATE maps, interpretations and observations, incorporated in the ESPON online MapFinder;
- Reports explaining methodological issues and results.
