Online Workshop: Sustainable urbanisation strategies in the Netherlands
Venue
Online
Against the backdrop of the recently completed ESPON project Sustainable Urbanization and land-use Practices in European Regions (SUPER), we cordially invite you to participate in a virtual peer-learning workshop on "sustainable urbanisation strategies” on May 20th (9:30 – 12:30 CET), organised by the ESPON-TNO project in the Netherlands. The workshop brings together Dutch national and regional practitioners and their counterparts in countries included in the SUPER study.
The COVID-19 crisis has had a significant impact on how people live and work, and therefore how they use and perceive the urban environment. A new balance is being sought between individual preferences and public interests like sustainability. Throughout Europe, urbanization strategies are being drawn up that address this balance. In the Netherlands, for example, regions are drafting strategies that tailor the objectives of the national environment and planning strategy (NOVI) to the wants, needs and particularities of their respective areas.
The discussions during the workshop will treat the following policy questions:
- What kinds of interventions have proven effective in promoting sustainable urbanization?
- How can the base of support for sustainable land-use interventions be strengthened?
- How do EU policies affect land-use and how can current and future policies be effectively deployed to promote sustainable urbanization?
The event will start with introductive presentations that will highlight the core takeaways from the ESPON SUPER project. It will be complemented with short pitches on policy implementation targeting urbanisation from Italian region and from the province of Zuid-Holland. Then, three breakout rooms that are linked to different aspects of the strategies will allow to initiate a discussion with respect to policy implementation in a setting where participants can freely share their experiences. Finally, main points from the discussions will be presented and will open the floor for plenary discussion.
