Area Grecanica-Calabria - PROFECY

Each case study within the PROFECY project looks into real inner peripheral problems and by applying the theoretical concepts and analysing the critical factors and drivers in the inner peripheral processes aims to improve practical responses. The Grecanica area in Italy has experienced a gradual and enduring process of peripheralisation marked by loss of population, employment and services and by abandonment and deterioration of the territory. This case study discusses the main triggers that influence their process of peripheralization: the relations of power between the local and the highest tiers, the local political and economic networks, declining public funding and the evolution of markets.
